Looking for holiness?
According to the this article published by the Baptist Press, the “Joshua Convergence” lays out some Principles of Affirmation that “young leaders” agree upon within the Southern Baptist Convention. (The Joshua Convergence gives a voice to younger leaders who support the conservative resurgence within the SBC and its emphasis on biblical inerrancy.)
One of these principles is Holiness. I like holiness. We need more of it. But… I find it kind of funny that the example used for Christians to “be holy” is that of abstaining from alcohol. Don’t worry about cheating on your spouse, worshiping the MLB gods, or coming before God with an unrepentant heart, just DON’T YOU DRINK THAT ALCOHOL!!
Also it’s not too hard to see what we’re aiming at when we read the next section as well. “Further, we are unequivocally opposed to the antinomian attitude in some Christian circles concerning unwholesome and immoral language, cynicism, and profanity. We feel strongly that the Bible condemns such actions.” Some in the SBC are pretty upset with a certain “cussing preacher”, certain outpost blogs, and others. But let’s don’t be legalistic about it…
